Based on over five years of research, Long Island’s Lighthouses: Past and Present explores the vast lighthouse heritage of the Long Island, New York area.

Long Island’s Lighthouses: Past and Present covers over 200 years of Long Island lighthouse history in 384 pages, more than 150 photos (including many rare archival photos), and research from national and local sources. A unique part of the book is the many contributions of stories, documentation and photos from former Long Island lighthouse keepers and their descendants. The book includes 24 light station chapters, a thorough bibliography, an index, a glossary, an introduction, a chapter on the area's minor aids to navigation, a chapter on the future of Long Island's historic lighthouses, a list of historic lighthouse preservation societies, and a list of suggested reading .

Historic light stations not only contain a great amount of local and national history, but their visibility and popularity provide a gateway for a greater appreciation of all history.

About the author:

Robert G. Müller is a co-founder and President of the Long Island Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society. His knowledge of Long Island’s lighthouse heritage is well established. He has written newsletter, newspaper, and magazine articles on the subject, and has consulted for many magazine and newspaper articles, and several books. Bob appears in the Plum Island segment of the News12 lighthouse video. His web site, LongIslandLighthouses.com, is a popular resource. Bob conducts lectures, leads tours, narrates cruises, and teaches the Chapter’s Long Island Lighthouse Expert Certification Course. He was chosen as the US Lighthouse Society’s Keeper of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2001. Bob is a National Parks Service volunteer tour guide at the Fire Island Lighthouse. He is also President of the East Islip (NY) Historical Society and will be teaching an adult education course about local lighthouse history through the East Islip High School, from which he graduated in 1982, in Fall 2004.

About the editors:

Carol House, Ph.D., is a founding member of the Chapter’s Board of Directors. She has been involved with lighthouse preservation since 1994, when she was involved in an effort by Plum Island employees to preserve the Plum Island lighthouse. Carol is a retired USDA veterinary microbiologist who has authored numerous scientific articles, book chapters and most recently, served as an editor for a graduate text, Conservation Medicine, Ecological Health in Practice published September, 2002 by Oxford University Press.

Diane Mancini was a founding member of the Chapter’s Board of Directors, and is the editor of the group's newsletter, The Long Island Light Keeper. She is a graduate of Rutgers University with a BA in Political Science. Diane is a book review editor for an international biology journal. She has been working with Bob on lighthouse research, writing, and editing since 1998.
