The above chronological listings show that the mid-1800's were a boom time for Long Island lighthouses. The establishment of the Lighthouse Board by Congress in 1852 undoubtedly contributed to this flurry of activity, as did the growing economic development and commercial importance of the region. Many lights were rebuilt or established during this period, as the following list shows.

Chronological listing of lost lights

1858: Original Fire Island light demolished.

1894, March 7: Gardiner's Island light lost in a storm.

1947, November 12:  Lloyd Harbor light destroyed by fire.

1948 December 23: Shinnecock light demolished.

1963 July 4: Original Long Beach Bar (Bug) Light destroyed by arsonists

1965: Cold Spring Harbor light relocated to private property.
