Until the publication of my book, you will not find a better resource for studying the lighthouses of Long Island than this site. I have made, and continue to make, every effort to provide an accurate look into the history of the lighthouses of the region.

The information on this site comes from a wide variety of sources, including the National Archives, the USCG Historian's Office, local and regional newspapers and magazines, descendants of former keepers, unofficial accounts from individuals, and more. While I strive to get the correct information on every page of this site, it is entirely possible that I may have used information from an errant source in some instances.

As this site progresses, I find myself occasionally finding such inaccuracies on this site. However, the time required to constantly check every page prohibits me from doing as frequently as I would like.

If you will be using this site for research, it would be worth your time to send me an e-mail and describe your project and which lighthouse(s) may be involved. I will be happy to look over the information on this site which concerns your project and offer any updates or corrections.

If you are using other sources for research on Long Island's lighthouses, be aware that the research materials available for Long Island's lighthouses sometimes contain conflicting, or just plain incorrect, information. Examples include:

• The builder of the Sands Point lighthouse
• The first keeper at Eaton's Neck
• Accessibility of the Old Field Point light
• The description of the Gardiner's Point lighthouse, and the ruins
• The cause of the 1974 fire at Cedar Island

Your best bet is to consult reliable sources as close in time and place to the event in question. Local libraries and historical societies are a wealth of information.
