Who Are We?  |  Why Should I Get Involved?

Ways you can help:

1. Donations. It takes money to preserve lighthouses.

2.Volunteering. We are a volunteer organization. Every moment of volunteer time helps us achieve our goals.

3. Telling your family and friends about our work. When more people get involved, we can complete more goals.

4. Writing letters to newpapers in support of local lighthouse preservation efforts. Many people are unaware of our rich lighthouse heritage. You can help get the word out. Contact us for guidance.

5. Attending special events. Your attendance motivates us, finances us, and educates us all.

You can help us succeed in our many preservation efforts. Your efforts make a difference.

The Chapter is involved in many projects. Our highest current priorities are:

1. The preservation of the Plum Island lighthouse.

This granite and cast iron 1869 structure, which sits on one of Long Island's most historic sites, has been threatened by neglect and erosion since its decommissioning and abandonment in 1978.

2. The listing of the Cedar Island lighthouse on the National Register.

This beautiful granite 1868 structure has been literally beaten and burned for decades. It's time to start a serious effort to preserve its contributions to Long Island's history, and that of our country.

3. The reopening of the Eaton's Neck tower to the public.

Prior to the Spring of 2000, the 1798 tower was open for tours to school groups and individuals. This tower, the second built on Long Island and the only one which still houses a historic Fresnel lens, is an educational and historic resource which should be publicly accessible. We hope to be able to work with the US Coast Guard to see this treasure once again become available to the public.
