Guide to Volunteering at a Lighthouse
I have been fortunate enough to volunteer, in one capacity or another, for all of Long Island's lighthouse groups. I that time, I have learned a great deal, made some good friends, and had a bunch of fun. I'd like to share that experience with you here, and encourage you to volunteer at a local lighthouse
If you like lighthouses, chances are good that you'd enjoy volunteering at one. Volunteering at a lighthouse puts you in touch with others that share your interests, allows you to further explore your interests, and can leave you with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Most lighthouse preservation groups, like most historical societies, count on the efforts of volunteers to accomplish their preservation and education goals. Volunteers run educational programs, lead tours, raise funds, do research, write for and edit newsletters, handle administrative tasks and more. No matter what you interests or skills, you can probably find a volunteer opportunity that will work for you and the organization.
Below are the local groups for which I have volunteered, so I can vouch for their legitimacy. I'll list some of what they do, but please contact them for specific volunteer opportunities.
